Ben Affleck is breaking his silence on his split from Jennifer Lopez, months after the pair finalized their divorce.
In a new interview with GQ published Tuesday (March 25), the Good Will Hunting actor opened up about his highly-publicized split from the "On the Floor" singer, who filed for divorce in August 2024 after two years of marriage. Affleck revealed some of the "truth" of what happened, stating that there was "no scandal, non soap opera, no intrigue" behind their eventual split, per E! News.
"There's a tendency to look at breakups and want to identify root causes or something. The truth is much more quotidian than probably people would believe or would be interesting," he said, adding, "It's just a story about people trying to figure out their lives and relationships in ways that we all sort of normally do."
The Accountant 2 star also cleared up speculation that their different ways of handling fame are what led to their split, some of which were explored in The Greatest Love Story Never Told, a documentary released last year that shined a light on their marriage.
"As happens in relationships, you don't always have the same attitude towards these things," he said. "And so I thought, Oh, this is interesting because how do you reconcile that? Because ... I love and support this person. I believe in them. They're great. I want people to see that."
He added, "You've got to own what you knew going into any relationship. I think it's important to say that wasn't the cause of some major fracture. It's not like you can watch that documentary and go, 'Oh, now I understand the issues that these two had.'"
The Oscar winner didn't dive deep into the causes of their split, admitting it felt too "vulnerable" and "sort of embarrassing" to talk about publicly, but Affleck noted he Affleck has "nothing but respect" for his ex.
