Michelle Trachtenberg died from complications of diabetes, the New York City Medical Examiner's Office confirmed to NBC News on Wednesday (April 16).
The Gossip Girl alum's mother found her unresponsive in her New York City apartment on February 26, and she was pronounced dead on scene. The actress, who received a liver transplant in the months leading up to her death, was well known for her roles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Ice Princess, and Harriet the Spy.
Her parents initially declined to have an autopsy performed as foul play was not suspected. The star did not share information about her declining health with fans but was very open about her condition with friends and family.
In February, a source told People that the 39-year-old was "really sick," unusually pale, and suffered physically and emotionally in the year before her passing.
"She told friends she was struggling. She was really, really sick and open with those in her circle about how much she was struggling."
Trachtenberg is survived by her mother and father, Micheal and Lana, and her sister Irene. The star spoke highly of her mother and sister and often referred to Lana as her "inspiring force."
"She is really proud of me and is really happy that I'm doing something that I love. She never pushed any of her particular ideals or opinions on me. She always just did what was best, and she's been my inspiring force," the actress told Blackfilm in 2005.
Trachtenberg also formed lifelong bonds with a handful of co-stars, including Gossip Girl's Chace Crawford and Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Sarah Michelle Gellar.
